Safety for hoof trimmers and those who work with them is never to be taken lightly. Here are a few quick tips for those who haven't worked with a hoof trimmer before.

  • Make sure the work area is level, clear of obstacles and well lit
  • Make sure you know your responsibilities before working around the machine
  • Communicate any questions or concerns you may have
  • Stay clear of the machine when the trimmer is out of your view because he won't likely see you either
  • Never rest your hands or any body part on the chute when its in operation
  • Let the trimmer know if there is a nervous or unruly animal about to enter the area
  • Refrain from using strong footbath chemicals such as Formalin if the trimmer must work around the footbath area.
  • Never bring a bull into the work area without proper help

Effective June 30th 2006 the Occupational Health and Safety Act encompassed all agricultural workplace areas from small to large farms, livestock to greenhouses, workers in Ontario are protected under the OHSA.

If your farm has over 6 employees it is up to the farm owner and the appointed employee safety representative to have a safety plan in place for trimming cattle on that farm.
